There is no doubt that Modafinil is becoming increasingly popular in Australia. In fact, it's become one of the most popular so-called "smart drugs" in recent years. A lot of people use it to help them boost their productivity and focus, and many students use it to help them study for exams.
There are a few reasons for Modafinil's popularity. Modafinil has been shown to be effective in treating a range of conditions, including narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It can also improve cognitive function in healthy adults. It's relatively safe and well-tolerated by most people. And finally, it actually works! A lot of people who take Modafinil report feeling more alert and focused, and many say it helps them get better grades.
So if you're looking for a way to boost your productivity, focus, or memory, Modafinil may be worth considering. Just be sure to do your research first, and always start with a low dose to see how you react.
But if you're here, it's likely because you're trying to find out more about how to buy Modafinil in Australia. If so, then you've come to the right place!
We've put together this buying guide to walk you through everything that you might need to know about Modafinil and how to buy it when you're living in Australia.
For our Australian readers that are just here looking for some reputable vendors then use the links below to read up about our preferred sellers and their current discounts.
This is going to be a detailed one so let's get stuck into it.
Is Modafinil legal in Australia?
So, straight into the tough question. The answer is a little complicated. Modafinil is classified as a Schedule 4 medication in Australia, which means that it is only available with a prescription from a doctor.
Schedule 4 in Australia is defined as follows:
"Substances, the use or supply of which should be by or on the order of persons permitted by State or Territory legislation to prescribe and should be available from a pharmacist on prescription."
According to the scheduling principles, a drug can be classified as a Schedule 4 medicine if it is a new therapeutic substance, has an unknown safety profile, requires professional supervision for use, or is intended to treat a condition that needs professional management.
The first two options are highly unlikely: Modafinil has been on the market in Australia for a long time, and its safety profile is well-known. Tick and tick.
We can only conclude that Modafinil is a Schedule 4 drug in Australia because of its significant impact on dopamine levels in the brain, making it vulnerable to abuse (which for Modafinil, research has proven otherwise); and lastly the fact that it's often used to diagnose and treat severe sleep problems like narcolepsy, which we can all agree needs to be originally assessed by a healthcare professional but also monitored on an ongoing basis.
It can be frustrating that Modafinil is categorised as a Schedule 4 drug, but considering the on-label medical conditions that it is legally used to treat that require ongoing consultation with your doctor, you can start to understand why it hasn't been recategorised.
How to get a prescription for Modafinil in Australia
Sadly, as we mentioned above, the only way you can get a Modafinil prescription is if you have a sleep disorder related condition and receive the diagnosis from a doctor.
In Australia, they don't hand out Modafinil prescriptions left and right like it's nothing - this is Australia we're talking about after all. This isn't some third-world country where anything goes when it comes to pharmaceuticals. You might be able to fool other doctors into thinking you have a sleep disorder, but not in Australia, most legitimate physicians will require that you do a sleep study before prescribing Modafinil as treatment. This can sometimes be a lengthy and expensive process to go through. Any there isn't a guarantee at the end that the doctor will even prescribe you Modafinil.
However, there is some good news!
Thankfully ordering Modafinil online has proven itself to be much easier than having to fake a sleeping condition to your doctor.
Ordering Modafinil online in Australia
In Australia, the sale of Modafinil without a prescription is prohibited. Although, you won't get into trouble for possessing or using it.
If you attempt to import medication into Australia without a permit, you will be in violation of the TGA's guidelines. You can find a list of controlled substances that are banned from being imported into the country on the Office of Drug Control's website.
Interestingly, if you have a look at their list of banned substances - Modafinil isn't on it. Don't just take our word for it, check it out yourself. Can you see it mentioned anywhere or any derivative of Modafinil? We definitely couldn't.
In important to note that according to the TGA, any prescription medications ordered online should come with a copy of your prescription from the online vendor. These medications will be confiscated at the border if they don't include the proper prescription documents.
If a prescription is not attached to the medication, a letter is simply sent to the destined recipient requesting that they provide proof of their prescription so that their parcel can be released by Customs.
In the event that a prescription isn't provided, the contents of the parcel get destroyed, and that is the end of that.
The reality of this whole situation is that parcel interception rarely happens. This is great news if you are looking to get your hands on some Modafinil but don't have a prescription.
Border security officials rarely check prescription status on these drugs, and most medications pass through undetected. They appear to be more concerned with detecting illicit substances like as opiates.
We are yet to hear of anyone being charged for ordering Modafinil online or possessing small amounts of Modafinil for personal use in Australia.

What you need to know about Modafinil
In the last decade Modafinil and other cognitive enhancing medications have only continued to explode in popularity.
Modafinil is a drug that was originally developed to treat narcolepsy, but it has become one of the more popular and widely used "Smart Drugs" in the recreational space. It is often getting used by students and professionals who need to be able to stay focused and awake for long periods of time.
So you now know that lots of people are taking Modafinil, but the next step is understanding exactly what it is, as well as learning how it works.
We've prepared some information that you might find useful in better understanding Modafinil, and whether it might (or might not) be the right drug for you.
The history of Modafinil
Modafinil was originally created in France by neurophysiologist professor Michel Jouvet and Lafon Laboratories.
Modafinil emerged from the first of a series of benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds developed in the 1970s, that also included Adrafinil.
Modafinil is the primary metabolite of Adrafinil but it doesn't have the polar -OH group on its terminal amide and has similar activity to the parent drug but is more commonly used.
Modafinil was first offered as an experimental treatment for narcolepsy in France in 1986. From 1994, Modafinil then went on to be prescribed to patients in France under the name of Modiodal.
In late 2002, the UK also approved the used to Modafinil.
In 1998, Modafinil was approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Narcolepsy. Later in 2003, Modafinil was approved for the treatment of Sleep Work Shift Disorder and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
It was sold over the counter in the United States by the American biopharmaceutical company Cephalon. They used to lease the manufacturing rights from Lafon Laboratories, but in 2001 they made the move to acquire the whole company, giving them the sole manufacturing rights.
Cephalon were able to maintain their monopoly right up until 2012 through a combination of patent protection and litigation legal cases following the expiry of the Modafinil patent in 2001. Soon after generic versions of Modafinil were readily available worldwide and at a much more affordable price.
What does Modafinil treat?
Modafinil is generally prescribed to treat medical conditions surrounding sleep, arousal and wakefulness.
Some of the conditions treated include the following:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Traumatic brain injury (Craniocerebral trauma)
Shift-Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD)
The benefits of Modafinil
Modafinil has a number of advantages, which has made it one of the most popular nootropics regularly taken by people all around the globe.
The following list contains some of the advantages reported for taking Modafinil:
Improved alertness and wakefulness
Improved cognitive function
Improved ability to concentrate and focus
Reduced fatigue; and
Improved mood.
Understanding the difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil
Modafinil is a racemic mixture (or racemate). What this means in chemistry is a racemic mixture has equal amounts of left- and right-handed enantiomers of a chiral molecule. A large number of chemicals exist in these two forms. The two enantiomers are chemically identical, and have the exact same structure. The only difference is that they are mirror images of each other.
A good analogy can be found with your hands. You have two hands, which are identical and structurally the same, however they are mirror opposites. One is left, and one is right.
Enantiomers are the “left and right” versions of a drug. These are labeled as the S- and R- enantiomers. Just as you have a dominant hand that is usually better at doing most tasks, there is also usually one enantiomer that is responsible for the majority of a drug’s effects. The other enantiomer can contribute to the effects, or in some cases may present adverse side effects.
In rare cases, the wrong enantiomer can be extremely harmful. Sometimes one enantiomer is completely useless. It just really depends on the racemic mixture.
Most racemic mixtures are equally balanced, meaning that the amount of the “left” enantiomer is equal to the amount of the “right” one. Modafinil is an equal combination of its S- and R- enantiomers.
Armodafinil is a "newer" drug that was introduced in 2007, whereas Modafinil was already on the market since the 1970s when it was discovered by the French neuroscientist Michel Jouvet. Armodafinil was marketed as the successor to Modafinil, and is purportedly more effective at lower doses.
Armodafinil is an enantiopure drug and is the active R- enantiomer of Modafinil. Enantiopure drugs are those that contain only one of the enantiomers available, R- or S-. What this means is that Modafinil already contains Armodafinil. However, Armodafinil does not contain Modafinil, it is only half of the racemic mixture in Modafinil.
The R- enantiomer is longer acting and is the one most responsible for the effects of Modafinil. Since the S- enantiomer is not as strong, Armodafinil’s dosage is therefore lower. Most standard doses of Armodafinil are 150 mg compared to Modafinil’s 200 mg. Armodafinil takes longer to reach its peak than Modafinil does. Some research has concluded that it could be up to 1.33x more potent with Armodafinil having a longer half-life than Modafinil, which means that it remains active in the body for a longer period of time.
The end there isn't a large difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil, and you are theoretically taking Armodafinil when you consume Modafinil.
What is the difference between the brand names and all the generic products?
Modafinil was originally discovered by the french family-owned French drug company Lafon Pharmaceuticals. The American pharmaceutical company Cephalon Pharmaceuticals (Cephalon) leased the manufacturing and selling rights of Modafinil from Lafon Laboratories, but in 2001 they acquired the whole company, giving Cephalon the sole manufacturing rights.
The brand name of Modafinil used to be Modiodal when it was owned by Lafon Pharmaceuticals, however, following the acquisition it became Cephalon's Provigil. Similarly, Cephalon had the patent for Armodafinil, which they would sell under the brand name Nuvigil.
So the two brand names are:
Provigil (Modafinil)
Nuvigil (Armodafinil)
Once the patent for a drug expires any pharmaceutical company can decide that they want produce and sell it now. The drugs produced by these other manufacturers are generic versions. Since Modafinil and Armodafinil had become so popular and highly sought after, many companies began to produce their own generic versions.
Here is a list of some of the more popular generic brands that are offered for sale by the online vendors:
Generic medicines are made by following the recipe outlined in the original patent. Think of it like baking a cake. The original brand-name manufacturer made the first cake, and patented its ingredients and methods. Now that information is available to the public, and anyone can make the same cake. In the United States, the FDA regulates the generic medicine (or cake) market to ensure that the product you receive matches the original brand-name product. If the brand-name product created a “Chocolate Raspberry Layer Cake” then the generic version must also be the same exact flavour.
The FDA requires that all generic medicines contain 85-128% of the brand name’s active ingredient. This means that generic products may sometimes be a bit weaker than the original formula, or they could even be a little stronger. But in general they must fall within that range.
All generics, regardless of their brand, contain the same primary ingredient and roughly the same amount.
What are the side effects of Modafinil?
No medication or drug is ever perfect, and it wouldn't be right for us to educate you about Modafinil without covering some of the potential side effects.
Even NZT in the movie Limitless with Bradley Cooper had negative side effects, which he only discovered later on since it was very much still an experimental drug. There are always going to be downsides, but ideally you need to find products that have more positives than they do have negatives. Otherwise, what's the point...
Despite Modafinil not being completely understood, it has been well researched, and consumed by the general public for long enough, that we now have a pretty good idea of all the different symptoms and side effects that you might experience while taking it.
Let me bring your attention to the more common side effects, which affect less than 15% of users:
Indigestion
Backache
Dizziness
Difficulty sleeping
Nausea
Diarrhoea
Anxiousness
While these side effects are not very appealing, they don't happen to everyone and some of these can also be avoided by better understanding the medication, as well as your own body.
Modafinil has been shown to be effective and well tolerated when taken by healthy individuals.
